Colonial Surgeon 1836-1843. He was a medical officer with the 51st Regiment stationed in the Colony between 1840 and 1847. He married Matilda Souper (born 1821) who arrived per the 'Sterling' 14 March 1841 on 6 September 1842. She died six days later on 12 September 1842. James visited India per the 'Champion' 18 June 1842 and returned by the same ship. He was granted eighteen months leave of absence and departed for England per the 'Trusty' on 26 January 1843.
