The Swan River Pioneers  1829 - 1838 was formed early in 1993 as a Special Interest Group of the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc.  In July 2017 the Group was incorporated and became an Affiliated Member of the WA Genealogical Society Inc. now known as Family History WA.

The era 1829-1838 was chosen as this was the period of Sir James Stirling's administration. His administration as Governor ended on 31st December 1838. On January 5th 1839 he departed the Colony with Lady Ellen Stirling and their family.

We produce 'Certificates of Descendancy' and Swan River Pioneers badges for those who can prove their direct line of descent from the early pioneers who arrived in the Swan River Colony between 1829-1838 (the period of Sir James Stirling's governorship).  These can be presented at one of our events throughout the year (See our Events page).

Members receive our quarterly newsletter, the Settlers' Gazette and are welcome to submit their own articles.

Members, family and friends are invited to attend our various Events.  Throughout the year, we hold Committee meetings, Social gatherings, History Walks, our annual AGM and of course our WA Day-Foundation Day Breakfast.  All events are well-attended and include speakers who present fascinating stories, information and research relating to our Swan River Pioneers.

About Us

History of the Organisation

The Swan River Pioneers  1829 - 1838 was formed early in 1993 as a Special Interest Group of the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc.  In July 2017 the Group was incorporated and became an Affiliated Member of the WA Genealogical Society Inc. now known as Family History WA.

The era 1829-1838 was chosen as this was the period of Sir James Stirling's administration. His administration as Governor ended on 31st December 1838. On January 5th 1839 he departed the Colony with Lady Ellen Stirling and their family.

Our Aim

  • To perpetuate and honour the memory of the early settlers for their enduring hardships and difficulties in the early years of the Swan River Colony, specifically the period from 1 June 1829 to 31 December 1838, and provide information on our Western Australian colonial history.

  • To complete biological and genealogical data of the pioneers and their families in order to provide resources to assist people in connecting branches of their own family trees.

  • To to collect and preserve material of any nature which illustrates aspects of the pioneers settlements of the Colony.

Membership

We produce 'Certificates of Descendancy' and Swan River Pioneers badges for those who can prove their direct line of descent from the early pioneers arriving in the Swan River Colony between 1829-1838.  These can be presented at one of our events throughout the year (See our Events page).

Members receive our quarterly newsletter, the Settlers' Gazette and are welcome to submit their own articles.  We can assist members with advertising family reunions and relevant events in our communities.  Past issues of the Gazette are published here on our site.

We host various Events throughout the year, open to members, their families and friends.  We hold social gatherings, history walks, our annual AGM and of course our WA Day-Foundation Day Breakfast (which attracts a gathering of over 100!).  Events are well-attended and include renound speakers and local historians who present fascinating stories, information and research relating to Western Australian Colonial History.  Our events provide links between families from the same lines of descendancy and allow for friendships and connections to be made.
