Richard Wells came on the third ship to the Colony as Colonel Latour's agent, attached to the ill-fated Leschenault land scheme. The establishment ended in 1830 due to Latour's lack of finance and management. Wells was later appointed Managing Cashier of the WA Bank in 1841 and was also granted land in the Avon district. Had Perth Lots L23 and L24 in 1830 and 1832 respectively. His final position was as a Manager of Commander Lieut. Irwin's property at Henley Park. Family tradition claims Susanna Wells to be the first European woman to step ashore at Fremantle. The women and children were brought in on two long boats after being kept on Garden Island for security. The Governor's wife was meant to officially land first, but Richard Wells carried his wife in earlier, as their long boat won the race to the beach. Wells claimed to suffer strained relations with the Governor afterwards. Susanna died in June 1838. Richard married a second time to Susannah Fortescue on 19 December 1839 at Perth. Richard died in 1846 at Perth.
