Two brothers, John and George Green embarked on the Tranby as indentured servants for the Swan River Settlement in Western Australia. John the elder sibling was the first onboard to sight the colony as told by an entry from Mr TC Brownell's diary. ' February 2 1830: About noon, land was discovered from the fore top mast by J Green, one of the steerage passengers.' John worked out his indenture with Mr Clarkson and then on the 15 January 1834 at the age of 29 years he was buried alive by the falling in of a well. The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal Saturday 18 January 1834 relates the tragedy. John Green's jarrah headboard which had been in the East Perth Cemetery is held by the Perth Museum.
