Alfred married Christina Slade 18 May 1853. She died 21 March 1860. Alfred was employed in the Lands Department as a surveyor 1838-1841 and again in 1843. Became a clerk in the Governor's office and in the Registrar of Deeds. Was the Acting Registrar General in 1856 and the Clerk to the Finance Board. Was a JP. Appointed Resident Magistrate at Toodyay between 1861 and 1865. Was at Geraldton when he committed suicide 15 November 1869, being guilty of defalcation of funds. His second wife whom he married on 1 October 1864, Deborah Wilberforce Clarkson (born 8 November 1834) died 28 March 1918.
